Mandy southan - textile & Lampwork artist

welcome to a world of colours and textures

Hello and welcome. I studied Fashion & Textiles at Ravensbourne many years ago and since then I have specialised in working with pure silks. I have developed a particular interest in traditional Japanese resist techniques for textiles and in my own work I often combine and adapt these traditional methods and use them in new ways.

My textile work is a journey and each piece I make takes time, a great deal of care and patience to produce. My colours are all mixed individually and are carefully blended and overpainted to create subtle tones and vibrant contrasts. Each piece I make is unique, my motto is creation, not production.

I taught textile art for many years in Adult Education and at the College in Hastings. My knowledge and love of teaching led me to write a number of books on silk painting and also to set up the Guild of Silk Painters of which I am honorary President. I also taught residential courses at wonderful West Dean College near Chichester for a number of years. I have also been a member of the Sussex Guild for craft makers in south east England.

About five years ago, I attended a course at West Dean on glass bead making which fired up a new passion in my life.  I now spend half my time in the studio with a brush in my hand and the other half hunched over a flaming torch making beads.

My lampwork glass beads are individually made, they are then annealed in a kiln and I put them together them as necklaces, pendants, earrings and bracelets using sterling silver chains, fillers and fastenings.

Now, I am about to embark on a new adventure as I am relocating to south west France where I hope to pursue my other passion which is painting in oils.

Post Script

Sadly, I won’t be attending any of this year’s Guild shows as I will be moving to France. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Sussex Guild for their friendship and support over the years and I would also like to thank my lovely clients who purchased silks and glass beads from me at the various Sussex Guild shows.
